Felipe Ehrenberg
Son Urgentes - full graphic series 1985-1986
Ehrenberg is internationally renowned as a Mexican conceptual artist whose multifaceted production made his work difficult to classify in the artistic canon. A controversial polemicist in art and politics (he ran for public office), he referred to himself as a neologist.
At the time this series was in production, Ehrenberg was an invited professor at the Art Institute of Chicago, whose seminar on “Art and Politics” found expression here.
The graphical technique is rather unusual in that every sample of the edition is unique. The technique is based on spray painted, registered stencils applied in layers common to street art but here applied to heavy paper. The color palette reflects the happenstance of availability at the local hardware store at a time before artist spray can paints became available. There is no attempt at registry, color and density consistency, as evidence in two samples from the same stencils. In essence, each graphic is a single work of art in its own right.
