Lindsay Daen
La Rogativa
Probably Lindsay Daen’s best known work depicting the religious procession undertaken by the bishop of San Juan during the British siege of the city in 1797. The finished 12-foot-high sculpture was commissioned as part of the 450th anniversary of the foundation of the city. It sits atop the city walls facing the bay.
In preparation for the final work, Daen undertook a series of studies or maquettes for the commission. Of these, only a limited few were cast: ten in this size and another four in a larger size. This maquette is number 2 of ten castings. Another maquette from this final series broke Sotheby’s records for the artist’s work in its 1997 Latin American Art auction.
Born in 1923 in New Zealand and raised in Australia, Lindsay Daen first visited Puerto Rico in 1955 eventually settling there fulltime until his death in 2001.

Lindsay Daen
Lares and Penates
These two pieces are one of a kind bas relief, paired sculptures specifically commissioned for the lobby of a building in Philadelphia. Conceived as a single thematic piece, they were originally displayed in niches built into a wall. The two were carefully removed and stored in San Juan, PR.
They depict the domestic ancient Roman guardians of the household and its family legacy. As such, they are often portrayed extending hospitality with food offerings or an open hand, and maternal grace reassuring the continuity of the family line through generations.
Cast in Spain, great pride was taken at the craftsmanship and thinness of the cast. The life size figures are hollow. Each niche is recessed about 12 inches on three sides, leaving the top open to facilitate lighting. They are in excellent condition with a natural patina which adds to its character.
Born in 1923 in New Zealand and raised in Australia, Lindsay Daen first visited Puerto Rico in 1955 eventually settling there fulltime until his death in 2001.

Hubert Caño
Fortunata
Bricolage, oil on canvas, mixed media with found objects
size: 48 x 70 in.
The works represent a mosaic of memories tattooed with countless emotions. The narrative is almost infinite in figurative portraits and fleeting images of a fragmented past. Whose totality is delineated by the object of focus. In this particular technique, the work of Hubert Caño has always been a joy of visual discoveries. - from Aló, ¿Quién llama? exhibition at the Liga de Arte de San Juan
