Vintage Graphics

Graphic Arts in Puerto Rico encompasses a tradition of affordable art as a popular cultural expression with many international recognized masters. Events like the former 'La Bienal de San Juan del Grabado Latinoamericano' brought international attention, artists, and exchange of ideas to the island. Classic posters and fine art prints of are available for purchase from our collection. Vintage graphics are true antiques. As such, they are delicate works of an ephemeral nature which reflect normal wear and tear through the years. Terms and Conditions apply.
Artwork: Galería Palomas Lorenzo Homar 1993 Exhibition Poster
ABOUT PRINTS There is a wide distinction between commercial and fine art prints. It has to do with the quality of the print, the size of the edition, expression, and purpose. That distinction affects value. Our offerings include both types inasmuch "el grabado" has always been a means of cultural expression in Latin America regardless of its purpose. Indeed, some artists like Lorenzo Homar used graphics as his principal artistic medium. Many of our offerings are personally dedicated by the artists and low edition prints. Low edition or low numbered prints from an edition, together with artist's prints or proofs are usually the better quality first impressions struck of the edition before the eventual degradation of the medium (plate or screen) wears out.
Different media can support a wide variety of editions. The smaller an edition is, the more valuable the individual pieces are. As such, media affects appraised value. Silkscreens in serigraphs wear out quickly. Therefore, editions are limited (about 150 tops for manual and 300 commercial) and far more valuable than lithography which may be able to support editions of 300 to 500+ prints. It is not unusual for lithographic limited edition plates to be struck out or destroyed to insure the value of the series.
lorenzo homar: bailarinas
These are either low numbered prints or artist's prints of the best in the edition.Three serigraphs are available from a series of four. Unlike Homar's illustrative graphics and posters, these portraits are artistic masterworks in their own right. The series feature prima ballerinas Alicia Alonso, Vanessa Ortiz and Alma Concepción. Each one depicts a signature role and style. These serigraphs were personally dedicated and gifted by the artist. 25 x 19 in. signed - unframed

Opening credits print from El Puente (film) - 1952 editionSigned linocut print by master printmaker (1921-1998) 19 x 24 in. - unframed El Puente (1950) was a DIVEDCO award winning film honored both at the Vennice and Edinburgh film festivals. The film featured a series of ten graphic prints by Rafael Tufiño, Lorenzo Homar, Juan Díaz and José Meléndez. The prints for the movie were later reprised in the 'Almanaque del pueblo' or People's Almanac published in 1952 by DIVEDCO. In this rare print a man is sounding the alarm of the river's rising tide using a conch shell. The stark contrast between the silhouetted figure and the dramatic sky is reminiscent of the German Expressionism influence on Mexican cinema – here applied to Puerto Rico. The film is available on YouTube.
